Automotive News Turning 100

Waiting with other journos for a supplier holiday luncheon to get started in 2000, I explained to the tall man next to me that I was a new reporter at the Detroit Free Press. He responded that he was Ed Lapham with Automotive News.

“You guys do good work,” I said.

He handed me his card and said I should give him a call when I get tired of the Freep.

Well, that took a while. Plus, there was a decade at Bloomberg between my Free Press and Auto News days. But the high standard of news at AN has long stood out among business-to-business publications, which is something that we will be celebrating throughout 2025 — the centennial year of Automotive News.

I believe there’s still a line in The Wall Street Journal’s guidebook to writing great business feature stories that encourages WSJ staffers to mine the trade press for trends and insights. I like to think that line was very much about us. …
