ETRMA Calls for a Regulatory Framework of Access to In-vehicle Data

20 December 2023

Last week, the Independent Service Providers (ISPs) coalition wrote to European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen urging prompt action in adopting a sector specific legislative proposal regarding access to in-vehicle data.

As part of ISP, the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) strongly agrees that a clear legal framework is essential to unlock the competition and innovation needed for new and secure mobility services that will benefit European consumers and businesses.

“The European tyre industry is already developing data-driven applications with tangible benefits for road safety and transport environmental performance”, said Adam McCarthy, ETRMA Secretary General.

As an example, tyre pressure monitoring is already crucial for CO2 emission reduction. Additionally, endurance and tyre wear predictions may inform users to avoid their premature replacement and provide road operators with information on infrastructure quality.

“Vehicles to be placed on the market in the next five years are being designed now”, added McCarthy. “What is at stake is fair access to in-vehicle data, which will contribute to the deployment of greener and safer mobility in Europe”.
