Revolutionary Tire Technology Brings NASA Closer to Mars Goals

For centuries, the Red Planet has captured humanity’s curiosity, and recent advancements are bringing us closer to unlocking its secrets. Despite decades of exploration, NASA has surveyed only 1% of Mars’ rugged, red terrain. To prepare for future human and robotic missions, the agency recently tested revolutionary rover tire technology at Martian-simulated facilities. Developed at NASA’s Glenn Research Center in Cleveland in collaboration with Goodyear Tire & Rubber, these innovative tires feature shape memory alloy (SMA) springs, a breakthrough that could reshape planetary exploration.

NASA’s testing, conducted at the Airbus Mars Yard in the United Kingdom, demonstrated that these next-generation tires can endure and adapt to the harsh conditions of Martian terrain while outperforming traditional materials.
