Tire Industry Project Members reduce their Carbon Footprint

Tire Industry Project members show double-digit progress in the reduction of their carbon footprint, as outlined in the latest KPI report published by the organization

The Tire Industry Project (TIP) has published its annual KPI report, focused on the sustainability performance of its members. The 2023 report includes KPIs related to seven pathways for the tire industry:

1. Natural rubber sustainability
2. Responsible sourcing
3. Operations
4. Employees
5. Tire and Road Wear Particles (TRWP)
6. Sustainable mobility and digital solutions
7. Low-carbon, circular solutions, and end-of-life tires (ELT)

“The tire industry is committed to supporting a sustainable and resilient future. The progress outlined in the 2023 report shows the strong effort of all of TIP’s Member Companies,” says Larisa Kryachkova, Executive Director of TIP. “For example, in 2023, tire companies have significantly reduced their carbon footprint, continuing to make advancements in the reduction of CO2 emissions by 18%, while almost doubling their adoption of renewable electricity to more than 52%.”

Over the course of 2023, TIP member companies continued to make advancements in the following areas:

• Renewable Energy Adoption: TIP members embraced renewable energy, resulting in a double-digit, year-on-year reduction in CO2 emissions (18%) and their intensity (12.5%). Renewable electricity usage increased significantly in 2023, going from 28.7% of renewable electricity in 2022 to over 52% in 2023.
• Climate Change Mitigation: TIP members made significant improvements in addressing climate change. In addition to reducing their CO2 emissions in 2023, four additional members secured validation of their greenhouse gas emission reduction targets from the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTI), bringing the total ratio of TIP members with validated SBTs to 70%.
• Waste Management: There was a marginal increase in waste generation and a 6% increase in waste intensity. However, TIP members are increasing waste recovery efforts year-over-year, reaching 94% in 2023 (up from 93.5% in 2022). Additionally, TIP is both developing the ELT Management Hierarchy and promoting circular economy models to improve ELT management.
• Diversity and Inclusion: 66% of new board nominees were women.
• TRWP Mitigation: TIP’s commitment to mitigating TRWP was reaffirmed by the publication of the TRWP Mitigation white paper in April 2024. In 2023, TIP contributed to the field by sponsoring 4 new publications and saw a 7% increase in citations for TRWP research, totaling 513 citations.
