Pirelli’s F1 Fixed Supply Rule to Stay in 2022

Since the start of 2016, in an effort to add variability to each grand prix, teams have been able to choose how aggressive they want to be with their tire selection for grand prix events.

Although they were limited in the total number of sets of tires they had, teams were able to vary the distribution of compounds within it – opting for a softer or harder rubber depending of their strategic choices for each individual track.

But, as part of the emergency saving measures introduced following the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, this free choice was stopped and instead Pirelli distributed the same compound selection to each team.

This rule remained the same last year and will also continue until 2022, when Pirelli will present its new 18-inch tires for the first time.

While the possibility of opening up compound choices remains something Pirelli is happy to consider in the future, it seems teams aren’t actually particularly eager for it to happen.
