CHIBA, Japan — A city near Tokyo has become the first in Japan to test technology that allows electric vehicles to recharge wirelessly while being driven on public roads. …
The technology is similar to wireless smartphone charging. The chargers embedded in the road apply electrical current only after detecting a vehicle. Plug-in hybrids can use the street coils, too.
The test is slated to run until March 2025 and will cover safety, durability and other aspects. Kashiwa aims to have automated shuttle buses with in-road charging by around 2030. …
