Americans Are Driving Less Due to High Gas Prices

This spring and summer have already brought about the sharpest spike in gas prices in years, and while prices have backed off the $5.00 highs seen during the first week of June, the nation’s car owners are still feeling plenty of other effects of gasoline being over $4.00 a gallon. Not all of the effects are what one might expect—and not all were easy to predict just a few months ago.

A new survey from AAA has revealed that Americans are making significant changes in light of the spike in gas prices, with 64% reporting that they’ve adapted their driving habits to higher gas prices. Of those, 88% of respondents say that they’re simply driving less, while roughly half have also reduced shopping and dining out. A third report to have delayed major purchases. …
